Backrooms

About Backrooms

Fluorescent lights screech overhead. The musty smell of damp carpets assaults your nostrils. You stand amidst hundreds of endless, yellowish passageways, with no map and no weapons. That's all that awaits you when you start Backrooms, a surreal space simulation game that pushes your orientation skills to the limit.

The Rules of Movement and Space Reading

The only key to survival is observation and listening. The rooms seem identical, but small details will betray the escape route. A broken ceiling tile, a louder-than-normal fan noise, or a stain on the wall are all clues to remember. Don't stand still for too long. The lights will start flickering when you stop moving, signaling impending danger. If you hear a second set of footsteps in sync with your own, turn around immediately.

Backrooms' Challenge Floor Structure

Starting Floor with Yellow Corridors

Players begin in a familiar space with yellow walls and decaying carpets. The loop map makes disorientation very quick. The main goal is to find spatial slides to move to the next area.

Steam-filled Industrial Floor

The next area opens up into a vast warehouse-like space filled with machinery. Fog, stagnant water, and flickering lights constantly reduce visibility. Players must move while paying attention to the sounds of the machinery to find their way.

Dark Tunnel Floor

The final section is the narrowest and darkest industrial tunnel system. Visibility is severely limited, requiring absolute composure. This is where your ability to remember routes and your reflexes to avoid risks are tested.

Keyboard Controls

The control mechanism is simplified to focus on the observation experience:

  • Use WASD or arrow keys to move; hold Shift to sprint.
  • Use your mouse to rotate the first-person view and interact with the clue pieces of paper.

For those who want to test their nerves of steel in endless corridors, Backrooms Game is a psychological challenge where only alertness will help you find your way out.
